Who Invented Christmas Lights?
Soon after Thomas Edison developed the light bulb that could be used for commercial use, the idea of Christmas tree lights was one of the first applications. Before the discovery of electricity candles were used as Christmas lights. The dangers of this were of major concern at the times.
As time evolved the candles had glass covers, or metal lanterns with small wicks and were hung on the trees like ornaments on Christmas trees. Think about doing that in this day and age: a recipe for a burning house.
Even with the dangers it took many years for holiday tree lights to become commercially available. It's said that the idea of these lights came from Edison's assistant, Edward Johnson: he had the bulbs made specially for his house and he displayed them his Christmas tree lights at his home on New York City.
From these humble beginnings the Christmas tree lights went through many changes before General Electric introduced them commercially. The early days of lights on Christmas trees was night lights strung together to make long stings of lights. You may have seen these in some old pictures. Those large bulbs that would shatter into a million pieces when they hit the floor.
Christmas mini lights were introduced in the mid to late 1970's. There have been many changes to the original Christmas lights but for the most part they are the same. Sales have climbed as application for these lights have changed to not just decorating the tree but also used as outdoor Christmas lights. Icicle lights are the most popular and are seen on most homes that use outdoor lighting at Christmas time. Outdoor decorative lighting has become one of the most popular types and can become somewhat of a competition among neighbors. Many people will use animated Christmas lights that can create a spectacular scene and some are even animated.
Many of the lights used now are led lights. They are long lasting and if one light goes out the whole string will still work, not like the old days, if one light was out you had to go through one by one to figure out the bad bulb. And with some holiday light strings of 100 or more, it was not a fun task. So make sure before you purchase your next set of Christmas lights that it says on the box that you don't have to replace a bad bulb to make the whole string of lights work.

Have you grown tired of your steady-on Christmas lights?
Perhaps it's time to add a little twinkle!
When designing your Christmas light display, there are several aspects of design to keep in mind as you make your lighting plans. Early in the process you'll choose the style of lights you want to use based what you like - from traditional C7 and C9 Christmas light sets, to mini lights to the latest in LED lighting. Christmas light lovers have never had so many choices. Next you need to consider a color scheme.
The most popular color is transparent with multi, red, blue and and green not too far behind. New upward trends in purple, pink, and teal are making the lighting future very exciting.
So, you've selected the types of lighting you want to use, you've decided on color and now you wonder, "what about twinkling and movement in my lighting display?" or perhaps you are thinking,"how do I drive my neighbors crazy with twinkle lights".
There are a wide variety of ways to add movement to your Holiday lighting. Let's take a quick look at a few of them.
1. Turn your steady mini lights into twinkling lights. That little extra bulb with a red tip is a flasher bulb. It causes all the lights on the string to turn on and off simultaneously.
You don't need more than one flasher per line but if you have a longer mini light set that is wired in sections, you can put a flasher in each section of bulbs.
2. Mini lights also come with built in controllers. These sets commonly have 140 lights and have multiple functions like chase, fade, slow fade, steady on and more. These light sets are like cayenne pepper and unless you are using them on your Christmas tree - that's classic - you should be cautious not to overuse these spicy lights.
Unless, of course, you like a carnival atmosphere in your lawn. In which case, go for it. Remember, those neighbors?
3. C7 and C9 Christmas light sets can be set up with 2-3 lines offset by 50% or 30% of the spacing between the individual bulbs and connected to a multi channel controller that will cycle throught the 3 channels. This will give your lights a marquee effect. (This is also a good approach for outlining signs.)
4. Lastly, one of the nicest and most elegant ways to add twinkle to your lighting is to sprinkle in a few C7 or c9 twinkle lights into your transparent bulb display. Imagine a wonderful tree, full of clear C7 lights - and every so often, randomly placed through the tree, a very few twinkling lights.
Twinkle light bulbs start to flash as they heat up - with about a one second on and a one second off rhythm. If you use just the right amount of twinkle lights, viewers won't necessarily see the twinkling action right away - they'll just see that you have a magical tree or two in your yard.
Steady on, twinkling, flashing. There are different ways to personalize your Christmas light display with light movement. Just consider it another part of your total design.

Stringing Outdoor Tree Lights
Ask anyone if they recognize what tree lights are and you will probably get one of many replies. Alright, that's not reliable. You will in all probability generate one reply out of numerous possibilities. How to Use Extension Cords For Outside Christmas Lights
End the extension cord nightmare for your outside Christmas lights and decorating. Yep, end that nightmare. All you need are the right extension cords to do your Outdoor Christmas Lighting and you will be looking forward to decorating for Christmas again next year.
I remember decorating with my mom and using these little clip on outlets to use outdoors and wrapping every connection in plastic wraps and little baggies...wow we've come a long way!
A Note About Safety...
When purchasing outdoor cords, look for labels marked with UL or ETL. This means that the product has been tested by an independent laboratory recognized by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Be sure the packaging states that it is designated for outdoor use. Outdoor extension cords are weatherproof and designed for use in harsh winter weather. Purchase timers to automatically turn lights on and off. Lights should be turned off when people are not present and they should not be left on overnight.
Electrical outlets for exterior lighting should accommodate three-prong grounded plugs and should be on an electrical circuit protected by a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI).
When connecting outdoor lighting, be careful not to have all the cords, plugs and wires that come from the same electrical outlet. One of the greatest dangers when installing outdoor lighting involve the use of ladders. Use a high-quality, sturdy ladder that is the proper height. Be sure it is securely positioned. To avoid falls, move the ladder instead of leaning from side to side.
I have several 25 foot extension cords that have 3 outlets on the end that I run from the outside outlets in the back of my yard to bring electric into my front yard and also use the outside front outlets. It brings the electric out to where you need it. Do not use inside outlets and close the window on the cord...big no no, by doing this can create a fire and/or damage to your home and window. I also use 25 foot extension cords that have 3 two outlet that are spaced throughout the cord. I love my Christmas extension cords and everyone in my home knows they are off limits. I store all my cords in a bin in my garage marked "Christmas Extension Cords"
A great way to connect net lights in your garden is to use a multi outlet stake. You can easily connect your lights through the stake. The stake can plug directly into your outside outlet or through the multi-outlet extension cord. Most stakes come with waterproof covers which eliviate those plastic bags.
Most multi outlet stakes now come with timers or remotes that allow you to turn off your lights at night. Two in One....just makes your decorating that much easier.
By using these great cords, I'm able to have the brightest house on the block during Christmas. Every year I have to promise my dear husband that I won't buy any more Christmas lights or decorations! Somehow I always find one that I just have to have. The new LED lights are great...my mission is to replace all my lights with LED..but then again I promised.
